Dear Fellow Teacher, I wanted to let you know that I will not be in the classroom all of next week and the following Monday. Prior to agreeing to teach at Ulmus Academy, I made a commitment to travel to Kampala, Uganda to serve at Faithfully Nurturing Children Academy with a team of eleven others. Plans have been made to continue educating your students in the same manner as they have been accustomed to from the beginning of the school year. The only difference may be a slight change in the schedule to accommodate those who will fill in for me. The curriculum will remain the same. However, grades may be delayed as I will be the one reviewing the students’ work when I return. Substitute teachers have been chosen. These educators will have the same expectations I have. Students will be expected to adhere to Ulmus’s Statement of Accountability. Class participation and homework completion will remain consistent. I encourage you to check out FNC’s website (https://www.fncacademy.org/index.html) and to watch Queen of Katwe, a Disney movie based on the true story of Phiona Mutesi, who is from Kampala, Uganda and whose life is changed when she discovers her talent for chess. These activities will give you and your child a glimpse of where I will be serving for five out the nine days of travel. If you have any questions, please reach out. Thank you, Connie Heberlein Monday, September 19, 2022 History and Geography

September 12, 2022 Dear Fellow Teacher, I call you “teacher” because you are the most important influence in your child’s success in school and in life. Thank you for the opportunity of allowing me to be part of the adventure! I will only have your child for a short time in this trip through life—just one to three fleeting school years—and I want to make a contribution that lasts a lifetime. There are currently 10 of us (including me) in Ulmus Academy’s Logic Classroom. We are settling into our new room and getting used to new routines after an extended summer. Please reach out to me if you have any concerns or questions. I may be reached through Brightwheel or through e-mail at [email protected]. With the start of school comes homework. Many dread this nightly ritual, but I promise to keep homework worthwhile and to a minimum. I will expect your child to read at least 20 minutes each night. Reading is fundamental to learning. It spills into every area of academics and everyday life. I also would like students to practice their basic math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) daily. I have provided each student with a pin number to log on to xtramath.org for practicing these building blocks for higher-level math concepts. Students need to master the basic math facts so they will find higher-level concepts easier to grasp and be equipped to solve math problems more quickly. Your child will bring home his or her work from school daily in a “take home” folder. Please take time to look this over and discuss the day. I expect each student to be responsible for communicating with his or her parents or guardians. The planner is a great tool to help in this area, and it is a necessary for organization skills. Planners have been provided for students who did not already have one. Students are required to fill out a planner every day. Letters from me will be regularly posted in Brightwheel as an effort to keep you up to date on the happenings of our class. Following this note, you will find our weekly schedule, this week’s plan, and a list of what we covered last week. In the future, the goal is to have weekly plans posted by 5:00 pm on Mondays. I’m looking forward to getting to know you and your child as our year progresses. Thank you, Connie Heberlein 2
